Here it is! while this final video may feel short for a three week process, I allowed myself to space out my work over the course of the fieldwork and am fairly pleased with the turnout of this final video. It is something I've been wanting to say for a while so I'm glad I had this opportunity to share it.

The filming process went well! It actually allowed me to travel a bit and step out into adventure, which is what this film is about.
I am SO thankful for all my friends that allowed me to follow them with a camera and pose them for a good shot, I would not be able to do this without them. I'm going to be honest, my video planning skills are pretty poor. I feel like ideas never flow out of me unless I have a camera in my hand and am already making the film. But alas, stepping out of my creative comfort zone is why I chose this project.
This week I forced myself to plan for my final short film. This one is pretty different than the others and has more of a motivational vibe to it rather than telling a story. We'll see how filming and editing go! I am involved in a sort of mentorship class at my school entitled PEER and this year I was a part of the video team. We were tasked with two videos to create for our assembly, "HERO IN THE HALLWAY." Because I was heavily working on this project and multiple others, I decided to let JAZZ rest for a while with the intentions that I will come back to it for the fieldwork time in which I will create a longer film.
For HITH we created two videos; I will explain the first here and the second in the next post. Our interview, documentary based video was out "Touchy" video. We did not have an official name for it, we just knew that we wanted it to be the tear-jerker video. In this, we had four students from my high school sit and talk about their lives: hardships, family, school life, etc. It came to be twelve minutes long. The editing and shooting for this video was way more last minute than ideal, but we pulled it together. The end product was okay, some parts hit and some parts did not. The effectiveness mostly came down to the way each interviewee told their story because we had minimal b-roll. I wish it had turned out better but we had to make do and show what we pulled together. The video was not bad by any means, but could have been better. Overall with the Touchy video I do think we got our point across that everyone's story matters. Joanne is one of my closest friends. She is such a ray of positivity and I loved hearing her story.
From a filmmakers standpoint, I had a lot of trouble creating a video to fit her story. My B-roll did not really fit like I wish it did, but I had to count my losses and create the video. At any rate, I definitely learned some things through this video. Sometimes an idea does not turn out the way you want it to and that is okay. "Everyone can go visit around and see those spectacular places and that's basically what I want to do: share it with people." Jun is a fairly new friend of mine but was so kind to be open and share his story with me. His love for capturing the beauty of the world around us is so inspiring and I hope you enjoy his feature!
I filmed this on Jun's 50mm lens and really loved how the footage turned out. Experiencing new gear is another reason I love this project! There are SO many creative teenagers out there and I'm encountering more and more as this project progresses. Love it. Thank you, Jun, for taking the time out of your week to be a part of this! "I started to especially fall in love with [piano] when I realized how much power the instrument actually had..." Christina’s story is finally here! She is such an inspiration to me and many and I am so blessed to call her my friend.
Shooting Christina’s story made me realize how important this project is to me. People often focus on a teenager’s future and what they’re going to do later in life but a lot overlook their past and where they have come from that has shaped them to be the person they are today. As teenagers are constantly learning about themselves it is important we reflect on what has brought us to the present. Christina, thank you for sharing this with me and everyone who may watch! Finished the rough cut for the second episode of Jazz today!
I took the opportunity to get a ton of editing done on my plane ride to Missouri today. As I put all the footage together I'm seeing how completely different this episode is from the first one and I am glad that it is turning out this way because I really wanted to tailor each episode to the person it is about. Can't wait to share Christina's story with you on Sunday! From my experience with the first episode of Jazz, I really wanted to focus on sound quality for this next episode. So I took to this microphone, the Blue Yeti and was determined to figure out how to use it.
It was much easier to handle than I thought to use and the sound quality came out great. I will definitely be using this more in the future. The one issue I may face is lining up the audio with the footage since I did not record them together though I recorded them at the same time. We will see how it works out in the editing process. |
